Stress is a demon that plagues us all, but did you know there is one incredibly quick and easy trick that will soothe you into a state of blissful calm? Apparently just rubbing your ears – or hanging a clothes peg off them – can illicit zen.

This technique is called ‘ear reflexology’ and works on the assumption that each part of our ears is wide up to another part of our body.

By touching parts of the ear you have a direct line to internal organs – and it can affect moods and dull pain.

It can relieve headaches, sinus pressure, pain relief and even addiction. Philippe Mathon, an expert and practitioner in reflexology, said: ‘This is definitely something good people can do at home. ‘If people are shown where to apply the pressure, which is quite then it’s an area they can access easily to relax.

‘There’s similar reflex point on the feet but people often can’t take their shoes of but massaging a relaxing point on their ear is something they can do throughout the day.’

Ear Reflexology Session

You can try a relaxing reflexology session with your finger tips. Here are the steps:

Sit on a chair in a quiet place. Massage both ears firmly but gently with your fingertips. Start from the top, gently rub the outer edge of your ear to the lobes with your index finger on the ear top and thumb below.Repeat this step 2-3 times

Rub the inner ear ridge from the top towards the earlobe with your index finger. Repeat 2-3 times.

Insert your finger in the ear avoiding the ear canal, rub your finger in a sweeping motion from the center to the outer edge. Repeat 2-3 times.

Rub the inner crevices of your ear, there are many reflex points there. Professionals usually use a blunt stick to work these points because fingers are too large to pinpoint a reflex.

Identify sensitive areas in your ear that feel sore, tender, and painful when you press them or squeeze them. Consult your ear reflexology chart to find reflex points for any particular issue

Ear Reflexology Techniques

You can get your ear reflexology chart online or buy a book. A big chart is easier to read as the small portion of your ear possesses hundreds of reflex points. Take your time, read the chart carefully and identify the areas you are interested in. Work on those areas. For example, the upper part of your outer ear will treat depression and anxiety.
